Nicodemus leads Philo and Artaban through the teeming streets of Jerusalem towards Pilate's palace to use Artaban's pearl to barter with Caiaphas over Jesus' release. Nicodemus runs on ahead while Philo stops to help Artaban whose heart is flaking out on him. Suddenly, a young woman in chains, who is being pursued by several Roman soldiers, falls down at Artaban's feet, recognizing his magus pouch. We learn that her name is Frenay, her father was the one and only Rashne, and that she had been confiscated by Caiaphas to pay for debts that Rashne had owed him. To Philo's astonishment, Artaban hands the pearl over to the soldier, paying for her release. A loud clamor and hammering echo out from Golgotha and Artaban falls to the ground. Artaban expresses his joy in being able to free Frenay and that that was the reason he had come to Jerusalem. As Artaban is dying, he sees into the heavens a myriad of people whom he had served coming to greet him, and amidst them, a particularly lovely one with out-stretched arms. Artaban's last words are "Elham, I have found my King. He is in my heart and in my eyes."
