Artaban travels to Egypt and ends up in King Turranius' palace n Alexandria amidst a horde of courtiers, guests, and visitors, where he discovers that his former friend, Rashne, now his arch enemy, has become an advisor to the king. Artaban witnesses Turranius give Rashne a nubian princess as his bride. The magus finds out from Turranius that the Holy Family has not shown up in his palace. A discussion ensues about why the need for a Messiah in the midst of all the power and glory of the Roman Empire and the treasures of Egypt. Artaban meets Philo, a well-known Jewish philosopher and statesman and his daughter, Tziporah. Philo has come to the court to petition King Turranius for his doctors to sell their medicine to the Jewish people, who are suffering greatly from a plague . Philo is denied his request and sarcastically told to depend upon his God to help his people.. Artaban, Philo, and Tziporah leave the court and go to the lfamous Alexandria ibrary, where Philo quotes from Isaiah concerning the Messiah.
