Piano Solo and Narration
2.
Sadness, sadness, intertwined with gladness. One can't comprehend them but to feel them both. Darkness, darkness, over-pow'red by lightness. Comprehend the light and fill dark. Dying, living, side by side existing, knowing both the friend and the foe. Rain and rainbows, not without the other; drops of sorrow carrying light. Sound and silence, meaningless in deafness. Songs without a singer, wasting all away. Listen, answer, answer in your sorrow. Answer in your joy, and sing -- My song of sorrow and joy.

Narration
4.
Darius: Great God, Ahura Mazda, hear the words we speak. O, cleanse us from the evil and the vices that do make us weak. Great God, send us holy fire, heart and eyes inspire, grant our great desire. Darius, Men’s Chorus: Let light and joy shine upon us in gladness, and overcome all our darkness and sadness. And let the light of all truth shine in ev'ry face, filling the human race, shining…shining…Shine. O, bless this flame to shine as eternal light. And bless each one here to keep it throughout his life. This holy fire our hearts inspire, renewing now our holy vow. O, let eternal light shine in our heart and eyes.

Believe 02:50
Artaban: A new star shines down from heav'n. A new hope to us is giv'n. And the time for us to seek the King is upon us! Come and join us! A new star shines in our lives. A new hope shines in our eyes! And the heav'ns are rich and alight with signs now upon us! Come and join us! Believe with me! Believe and see! Believe the signs! Believe the skies! Believe the prophets' words. Believe they saw this day. Believe, and see the signs. O, be not blind! A new star shines in our lives. A new hope shines in our lives. O, believe with me, that our long awaited King is among us! Come and join us! Believe!

8.
Darius: You're one of those who's walked thru sorrow's valley and lost so much. You know well grief and pain. Yet, in the depths of sadness of your story, somehow you rise and find your quest, again. Artaban: I am no stranger to that path of suff'ring. I've walked and known those footsteps on parched land. And when I think I nearly lost hope trying, I hear the words that bade me try again. Darius and Artaban: You are in my heart and in my eyes, tho' near or far. And may God keep you in His heart. Nothing can dim the brightness of love refined as gold. Nothing can dull the whiteness of trials of blood turned fresh as snow. You are in my heart and in my eyes, tho' near or far. And may God keep you in His heart. You are in my heart and in my eyes, thru life, you are. And may God keep you in His heart and eyes.

Narration
10.
Children: Wiping the sleep away from my eyes, and feeling so hungry; no big surprise. Looking around, there's nothing to eat. But look at that big sunrise! Chorus: Waking up worried, worn out and weary, feeling those feelings; not a surprise. Wondering when our children will eat. But look! What a grand sunrise! I have some oil, and I have some meal, and I have some soup; a pleasant surprise! Put them together, call it a feast. And, my, how the sun does shine! Day after day toiling to survive, chasing shadows of hope in this nomad life. Father and mother and daughter, son, we're no richer for chasing the hot, dry sun, than when we began. All in a day a miracle happens. Tragedy, sorrow must wait their turn. Marriage vows spoken, new life is given. All in a day of our lives. All in a day so much that can happen. No one can see tomorrow today. Here, in this moment, let it be happy. In ev'ry day of my life. All in a day of my life.

Raechel: May the Lord protect and bless you. May your path be filled with light. May He always smile upon you, finding favor in His sight. Artaban: (You are in my heart and in my eyes, tho’ near or far. And may God keep you in His heart and eyes.) Chorus: May the hosts of heav'n defend you and encircle you around. May your name be known for good and in the Book of Righteous found. May the Lord protect and bless you. May your path be filled with light. (You are in my heart and in my eyes.) May He always smile upon you. (You are in my heart and in my eyes, tho’ near or far.) To His bosom may you fly. May He always bless you. May He always keep you in His heart and eyes.

Sariah: Quiet now, my little one. Still your little feet. Calm your mind and rest your eyes. Let the night bring sleep. Night has come, my little one, silent and serene. In my bosom safely rest. Pleasant may you dream. Feel the beating of my heart. Feel each beat of love. Feel the warming light of love as the stars above. Quiet now, my little one. Still your little feet. Calm your mind and rest your eyes. Let the night bring sleep. Artaban: Oh, sweet King, let me give you these gifts I bear, gifts of adoration.

Holy Child 01:08
Narration
16.
Sariah: He looked at me. And tho' He didn't even say my name, His look told me He knew it just the same. He looked at me. He looked at me, as tho' forever only lasts for now, as tho' He's known me agelessly somehow. He looked at me. I didn't want to feel the things I did, emotions so intense and strange as this. But I couldn't look away. I couldn't find a way to resist. He looked at me. Not merely in my eyes, but in my soul. He knows my heart, things no one else can know. He looked at me. He looked at me, and in His face is endless, perfect love. Such love I've never dreamed I'm worthy of. He looked at me. When others shout their mockery, and shadows gather round, what mem'ry can I keep with me to cast away my doubts? He looked at me. He looked at me.

Philo: No jeweled crown upon His head. No scepter, gold, or lovely clothing. For He was born of lowliness. So says the scripture, thus fore-showing. The stable and the manger bed suffice this King of ev'ry kingdom. For whom else would a new star shine with host of angels brightly singing? Artaban: He looks into your soul, not just your eyes. The universe is His, and earth and skies. He has no need for earthly wealth or fame, and living things all answer to His name. Tziporah: No palace grand or stately court can hold His majesty and power. And yet it's possible that you might find Him in the quiet hour. But if you walk among the lost, the contrite, and the poor down trodden, it seems that you may spy Him there to bless the outcast and forgotten. Philo: But if you still can't find Him, you might ponder on this thought: Philo and Tziporah: You may find Him here, inside your heart.

Elephantine 04:39

22.
Kaveh: Artaban! What are you saying? Artaban! What are you doing? Artaban! Your place is among your people. Artaban! You should be living among the kings and rulers of Persia in palaces, surrounded by servants and luxury. And who will care for your house and lands? You can't ignore your family and friends. You know what they'll say, if you don't return. Artaban, don't turn your back on us now! Artaban: Once, I, too, saw these things: visions of leading my people. Once, I felt strong and sure. I felt my heart was right. But now I clearly see that I sought power to feel secure. Disparaging Rahim for glory, for fame, but losing them all, in the end. Kaveh: Artaban, you're not coming with me. Artaban, what will I tell them? Artaban: These people here need to heal, not a noble ruler. Kaveh: Artaban, they'll make me Magupaiti! Artaban, you'll be banned from the order! Artaban: I’m needed here. God has called me here to bless these people. Kaveh and Artaban: I'm not good enough to lead the men I so revere. Kaveh: Not strong enough to heed the call of God. Artaban: You're good enough to heed the call of God.

24.
Chorus: One day you're young, another you're old. What happens between is what they call “life.” Good days and bad, though years come and go, won't stop the great sun to rise. One day you're well, another you're not! One day is clouds, another, bright skies. Happiness grows from sadness forgot. Then, oh, how the sun does shine. . Building a town or building a soul takes coming together. Come and unite! Happy the process, reaching the goal, sparkling in rich sun light! Father and mother and daughter, son, whether happy or sad, let us live in love. Patient and healer and neighbor, friend, oh, the fortunes of life one may never tell ‘till the daylight ends. Older Tziporah: All in a day so much that can happen. No one can see tomorrow today. Here, in this moment, let it be happy. In ev'ry day of my life. All in a day of my life.

Philo: A new hope to us is giv'n. A new day burst from the heav'ns! And the time, my friend, has come again; if you seek Him, you shall find Him! Believe with me! Believe and see! Believe the signs! Believe it's time! A new hope now fills our lives. A new hope shines in our eyes. O, believe with me, that you'll see the King of Kings. If you seek Him, you will find Him! Believe!

Chorus: Dying, living, side by side existing, knowing both the friend and the foe. Rain and rainbows, not without the other; drops of sorrow carrying light. May the Lord protect and bless you. May your path be filled with light. (You are in my heart and in my eyes.) May He always smile upon you, finding favor in His sight. (You are in my heart and in my eyes, tho’ near or far, thru life, you are, thru life, you are.) May the Lord protect and bless you. May your path be filled with light. (You are in my heart and in my eyes.) May He always smile upon you. To His bosom may you fly. (You are in my heart and in my eyes, tho’ near or far.) May He always bless you. May He always keep you in His heart and ahh, ahh, ahh, ahh. When we serve humanity, our brothers and our sisters, we have served the God of love, God who also loves you, who loves you, who loves you. Amen!

about

This is the first album coming out of our more than 12-year Artaban, The Other Wiseman project. The musical narrative album (narration, piano accompaniment, and songs) tells the story of Artaban, a magus from ancient Persia, who spends over 30 years of his life searching for the Messiah. Adapted from Henry Van Dyke's original story (1896), but much more fleshed out.
